What’s Up Around That Bend?

When I was in high-school, my friends and I used to drive out to a river near the town reservoir. There was a spot where we could sit up on some rocks which were about 50 feet above the river that was rushing below. One day as you might imagine, one of us got the idea to jump into the water from up there. We had heard stories of other people jumping, so we knew it was possible. My buddy Mike suddenly stood up, pulled off his clothes, and was flying through the air toward the water. The rest of us were watching and holding our breath. Mike disappeared in the water for a few very long seconds and then looked up, smiled and gave us a thumbs-up. Then one by one we mustered the courage to follow him. This then became a great ritual for us that we would do at all times of the year, even if it was snowing.

I speak to many people every day. One of the things that we usually discuss is what the person has been doing. We all report on what new things we’ve done, what we’ve tried, what we’ve eaten, what movies we’ve seen, what we’ve read, and many times who we’ve talked to. This is one of the ways that we begin to find out about new terrain. We find out if it’s safe, if it’s interesting, and if it’s worth exploring.

It strikes me that over time there is always someone who tests something out for the people around them. It must have taken an incredible amount of courage to be the first person to go to space, and even they were preceded by animals. We all know someone who tried the first computer in there community, had the first cell phone, or even tried a strange food. There’s usually someone before us who went to a new school, started working or went out on that first date.

In this way of sharing experience, we all do each other a tremendous service. We all help each other break new ground, sometimes taking the lead, and sometimes following. This is one of the ways that we learn as a group or a community.

What To Do:

  1. Notice the times and places in your life where you have taken the lead in activities. What are the times when you’ve broken new ground in your life and for those around you?
  2. Notice the people around you who have led the way for you in various activities.
  3. Think of 2 or 3 goals that you have and think of who you can speak to who may have already paved the way for you in this area? What can you learn from speaking to them.
  4. What’s something that you’ve always wanted to do that you can begin this week? Choose one of these and take the first few steps in doing this.

As always enjoy!,

Rob

What I’ve been up to:

It’s been an exciting couple of weeks. My colleague Charlie Baxter and I gave a talk for about 130 real estate agents. This was a big crowd for us, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to the next one.

We also gave our latest installment of our “Dealing With Difficult People Seminar,” which was great. We talked about several powerful distinctions about how to use language with greater impact.

This week I began a weekly tele-class/discussion on practice building for solo professionals like myself. In this group we’ll be covering various topics on how to build a thriving practice. This week’s call went great. If anyone is interested in joining us, please contact me. We talk once a week and it’s FREE.
